I'm definitely with you on the dangers of being able to surround yourself with a like-minded community, to th exclusion of all others. There are a lot more less damaging but still unpleasant side-effects - for instance, if you went by my twitter feed, the AV referendum would have turned out overwhelmingly in favour. It's easy to lose perspective - the ivory towers are digital, you can carry them with you wherever you go. BUT - people were engaged in this kind of "fannish" behaviour long before the internet. Printed zines, conspiracy pamphlets etc, though your point about momentum stands. Unfortunately, it's also one of the wonderful and lovely things about the internet. For every pro-ana group, there's a livejournal support group for mental health issues. The kind of self-destructiveness/blinkered approach at the fringes that you're describing don't actually need personalisation and recommendation engines and filtered search to flourish - those are mental ghettoes that are self-constructed, I'm not sure you can design that out?

' leakage and imperfection.' You're right, this is the money point. Pariser points out that Fox News advertises its agenda and Google personalised search doesn't, which is quite true, but Fox News also never throws up outlying contrarian search results. And the possibilities of filtering *accelerate* some forms of disruption: conservative trolls actively seek out liberal blogs to comment on, and vice versa.
There is I think though a counterpoint. It's possible to find a community of enthusiasm for any interest or point of view, no matter how self-destructive or silly. I don't see pro-ana could have flourished without the Internet. I can't imagine the 9/11 Truther movement would have achieved the same kind of momentum without the filtered Internet's ability to tune out alternative information. The best cure for this is of course the habit of critical thinking, not the excision of filtering mechanisms

Personally I’m glad that HBO isn’t holding anything back. If
I would choose one word to describe this show, that word would be “epic”. Now
that I have Sling technology with DISH Network, I never miss any episodes
because I can use my iPhone to watch shows anytime I want. Being that I am a
customer and employee of DISH I can’t recommend the TV Everywhere feature
enough to anyone who likes TV on the go. Right now new DISH Network customers
can get a free Sling Adapter. More info online at http://goo.gl/Qsggz.

Sean Bean would lop Will Mellor's head off and post it on a spike as a warning to his enemies. I know you're just trying to rile me. I refuse to be riled.

I watched the whole season, but I'm not complaining now that it's cancelled. It was a gloomy, unrewarding show to watch. If there are true fans of the show out there, I'd be curious at what they liked about it. For me, the initial appeal was the pilot episode. I remember watching it and thinking, "what the heck does this have to do with BSG?" Of course, the pilot cleared up a few big questions concerning BSG, and for that alone it was worth watching. Also, I really enjoyed the dark idea of resurrecting loved ones in the virtual world. I wished the whole show was more about that.
